One of the most consistent things we hear in speaking with people who are considering building a business is, “I don’t want to sell anything,” or “I just want to work by myself without having to speak with anyone.”

Usually, what people mean when they say these things is that they don’t want to be pushy and aggressive with others.  Everyone has had a past experience when they’ve purchased something, and an almost immediate dread accompanies their decision.  Meanwhile an overly zealous salesperson just keeps ramming it down their throat.

That image of the trickster used car salesman, or the door-to-door salesman who jams his foot in the door to speak with people, is in reality the image of an extremely poor communicator.  And if you looked in those people’s bank accounts, you’d find a “poor person” as well!

When people learn that “selling” is simply another form of communication, and that they’re doing it all the time, the idea doesn’t seem quite as scary.  And pushy and aggressive just doesn’t work well in sales or any other form of communication.

Here are 5 timeless success principles of communication, whether it’s selling or simply communicating with your spouse, neighbor, or boss:

1.  Be sincerely interested in the other person. Make what they want your center focus, at least for this conversation, at least for now.

2.  Don’t be “interesting.”  This concept goes hand in hand with #1!  If you’re trying to impress others with your accomplishments and successes, you can’t show a sincere interest THEM.

3.  Be sincere in trying to help.  If you stick by this principle, things will “fall right,” no matter what “right” is.

4.  Pause before responding.  Let the other person say everything they have to say, and NEVER interrupt!

5.  Ask questions.  When you’re asking questions, you’re showing a sincere interest in them…and at the same time, controlling the direction of the conversation. (And since you are in control, remember principle #3 above:  try to help!)
